Topix allows writers to be published instantly. Their whole philosophy is "User Generated". Without being another about.com what is it that Google is shooting for here? Sounds to me like just adding value to their search property. Like google maps after mapquest, or news.google after topix.net. or Igoogle after myyahoo. Who will they copy next?
