INteresting post and interesting train of thought. I agree with the fact that common interest can be a powerful driver, but then again... Isn't the power and the strength of a social network 'the ability to connect'?
Main purpose of social networks being the ability to connect and investigate into shared interests, based on trust.
In your view, the niche sites bear close resemblance to the old portal site approach, regardless of the fact that hey are using web 2.0 philosophy, or did i miss something?

I think you just nailed the future of social network. That's exactly where we are going. As a niched social network website owner, I had envisioned this trend and I truly believe this will be the future of the internet marketing. Great post! All our experts should read this post.

I totally agree that Niche Social Networks will rule the landscape in years to come.

You only have to look at:

Shelfari – Catering for book lovers, who share opinions about books
Virb – Catering for users who think MySpace profiles are boring and ugly
Beautiful Society – Catering for users who have ‘favourite things’ and want to share
Threadless – Catering for users who want to share T-shirt designs

To see that these niche communities are thriving.

Sounds like we need a directory of niche social sites. They are so hard to come by and we need good examples to follow. Thanks for the article.

Great post. I run a niche social networking site and I have found it to be far more useful that the big ones because everyone on the site is your audience. You do not have to try to try to search sift and filter to get to the people you want to talk to.
