Amber,

Tank you for your input, and you are absolutely right. There is nothing that states that an MBA is the end all be all of running a business.

What an MBA normally shows is that the person has an interest and passion for business, which is why they chose that area to excel in. Those who educated themselves in other areas had at least at that time a different passion.

As a consultant I see and hear all too often business owners complaining that they no longer are doing what they started a business to do. Be it gardening or anything else. They have become managers and are not happy with it. These are the ones that make bad managers and bad business people, because they are simply not passionate about it.

If you don't like your job, you won't perform well. Lacking the passion for business means that these owners are more often than not limiting the growth of the business.

The problem is that those who see the business of running a business as a necessary evil will never be very good at it. And since they lack the passion, they will not grow into becoming any better either. These are the ones that should hire someone who has the passion, knowledge and skills for just business.

Nice post. You noted some solid points.

I think it is important for anyone, let alone a small business owner , to always be challenging one's self and constantly be learning something outside the scope of his / her knowledge.

Allot of people tend to get pin holed into one area of a certain spectrum of industry --- and they remain there. In todays world - technology and business standards are changing so fast and advancing rapidly that if you adhere to the old business mantra that having an MBA / Degree is the end all - be all , the epitome of your resume - then you will will be missing out on developing your full potential.

A degree is not the holy grail of business. Yes, it gives you an edge on the specific area you studied in, but it doesn't always equate to being knowledgeable. There is a thin line between being well read in an area and being able to apply that knowledge to the real world. Anyone can read books and past tests. It is the element of using those tools and applying them to your business in a professional , ingenious and efficient manner that allows you to shine.
